Tóm tắt
English speaking anxiety is a common challenge for the learners of English as a foreign language, but the current research has focused primarily on understanding its causes rather than on how to cope. This study aims to explore the strategies that the Vietnamese students used to deal with their anxiety when speaking English, through semi-structured interviews with eight students studying English as a foreign language at a university in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The analysis results showed that the learners used five main groups of strategies including emotional strategies, problem-focused strategies, social support strategies, behavioral strategies, and cognitive restructuring strategies. From there, the study proposes pedagogical implications to build a learning environment that supports psychology and develops the learners’ self-confidence.
